Prospective Renewal: Mushtaq Ahmed’s Consultancy with Bangladesh
Authored by Atif Azam • Published on [Date]
Mushtaq Ahmed, renowned for his pivotal role as spin consultant with the Bangladesh team since prior to the T20 World Cup last year, is on the verge of a significant career development. Sources within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) disclosed on Thursday that they are poised to extend Mushtaq’s tenure for an additional two years.
Negotiations are nearing conclusion, with only minor details pending amidst assurances that both parties will soon formalize the agreement. A senior BCB official confirmed to Cricbuzz that Mushtaq is projected to contribute around 130 days annually in various capacities with the board.
“He (Mushtaq) will continue as the spin consultant not just for the national team,” the official highlighted, “but we also envision him mentoring emerging talents across different platforms, including the High Performance Unit and other developmental programs.”
Mushtaq, the celebrated Pakistan leg-spinner and a World Cup champion from 1992, originally joined the Bangladesh men’s national setup as their spin bowling coach in April 2024. His expertise was tapped to nurture the spin department through the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. Despite a brief departure due to personal obligations, he rejoined prior to the home series against South Africa and was integral to Bangladesh’s coaching staff during the Champions Trophy.
Prior to his engagement with Bangladesh, Mushtaq, who boasts an impressive tally of 185 Test and 161 ODI wickets, amassed considerable coaching experience. His previous assignments include working with England (2008-2014), the West Indies (2018-19), and Pakistan (2020-22) as a spin bowling coach, along with serving as the Pakistan team’s bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016.
