**BCCI Poised to Make Crucial Decisions on Tobacco and Crypto Sponsorships**
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to convene for an emergent Apex Council meeting in Kolkata on March 22 to form the organizing committee for the Women’s ODI World Cup. In addition, the council will establish the venues for the ICC event slated for later this year. This pivotal meeting will precede the IPL opening match between defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens.
India last hosted the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2013, and with the 2025 tournament approaching, the precise schedule is yet to be finalized. As per the agenda obtained by the Press Trust of India (PTI), discussions will focus on forming the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 and deliberating on venue selections. With two finals appearances in the 50-over format, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team is keen to capture the elusive ICC trophy on home soil.
The Apex Council will also outline the framework for the 2025-26 domestic season. As part of the upcoming home season, India will host series against West Indies and South Africa, with venue decisions expected in the session. In addition, the council will address administrative updates, such as approving new signatory changes for BCCI’s bank accounts, following the installation of new office-bearers.
Responding to government directives, the BCCI is poised to prohibit tobacco sponsorships. Earlier this month, the health ministry directed the BCCI to eliminate tobacco and alcohol promotions, including surrogate advertisements, during the IPL, beginning March 22. The Apex Council will consider this directive and discuss related sponsorships, including those from the tobacco and cryptocurrency sectors, as specified in agenda item No. 9.
