As the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Punjab Kings (PBKS) held a season launch press conference on Tuesday, March 18. This event featured Head Coach Ricky Ponting, Captain Shreyas Iyer, and CEO Satish Menon, who provided insights into the team’s ambitions for the upcoming season. Ponting was effusive in his praise for Shreyas, expressing his delight at having him as captain and his eagerness to work with him again. “He’s an incredible individual and an IPL-winning captain. We simply could not ask for more. He joined the camp only recently, yet he is already leaving his mark as a leader, which will continue to develop in the coming days as we prepare for our first match. As I mentioned, I could not be happier,” Ponting stated, as per a release by Punjab Kings.
Ponting further emphasized the balanced composition of the squad, which integrates a blend of youth and experience. “We have a potent mix of young talent and seasoned players among both our domestic and international squad members,” he added. “I am thrilled with how the team has come together. Our first session last night was excellent, and the players trained exceptionally well.”
Sharing his own sentiments, Shreyas Iyer expressed enthusiasm for working alongside Ponting once more, noting the profound impact of the coach’s support on the team’s depth. “His belief in every player is unwavering. In our previous collaboration, he instilled in me the confidence to excel in this format. The assurance he provides is unparalleled,” Iyer remarked, as quoted from the Punjab Kings release.
He further elaborated on the team’s goals, stating, “Our aim is to clinch the trophy. This mindset dictates our step-by-step approach—it’s not something achieved overnight. The dedication and camaraderie we’re fostering in practice are promising signs of success.”
CEO Satish Menon also highlighted the team’s strategic preparations, underscoring the fearless nature of the young talents. “We have an exceptional coach in Ponting and an IPL champion in Iyer. It doesn’t get any more formidable. Our focus on cultivating Punjab’s brand is evident in our squad composition, with a significant presence of local players.”
Punjab Kings will commence their season against Gujarat Titans on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by home games at the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
