21.03.2025**Dale Steyn Expresses Displeasure with Contemporary Fast Bowlers, Highlights Jasprit Bumrah and Kagiso Rabada’s Exceptional Skills**
Dale Steyn, the iconic South African fast bowler, has voiced his concern and dissatisfaction with the current generation of fast bowlers, emphasizing that only a select few can perform decisively at crucial junctures in matches by accurately reading and adapting to the game’s evolving demands. Steyn highlighted two bowlers who stand out from their contemporaries: India’s pace superstar Jasprit Bumrah, recently honored as the ICC Cricketer of the Year, and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, often seen as Steyn’s heir apparent.
Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Steyn conveyed his observations: “In today’s game, I’ve watched players who persistently bowl six deliveries without altering the field, despite having a decade of experience at the highest level. Observing this, I find myself frustrated, pulling my hair out, wondering why they can’t foresee the impending consequences.”
Steyn reserved special recognition for players like Bumrah and Rabada, emphasizing Bumrah in particular as the most comprehensive fast-bowling talent. “Jasprit Bumrah, in my opinion, is the complete package alongside Kagiso (Rabada). Their ability to impact a game by claiming vital wickets at any moment is invaluable. If we can nurture more bowlers of their caliber, our fast-bowling resources will see significant improvement,” Steyn stated. “Effective fast bowling today isn’t merely about delivering at 155 kph or mastering countless skills; it’s about seizing the critical moments when the captain relies on you,” he further noted.
New Zealand’s renowned pace figure Shane Bond also contributed to the discussion, echoing Steyn’s sentiments by claiming that many modern-day fast bowlers appear disoriented during pressure situations. “I believe that about 70% of bowlers are often unsure of their approach. I always advise captains not to hesitate to guide their bowlers on what deliveries to bowl and adjust the field accordingly,” Bond remarked.
Bumrah is currently in rehabilitation from a back injury and is working towards fitness to represent Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025, although it is anticipated that he may miss the initial matches. Conversely, Rabada, having been acquired by Gujarat Titans (GT) for INR 10.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, will be donning new colors this season.
