27.03.2025**Hardik Pandya Addresses One-Match IPL Suspension, Comments on Rule Implications**
In a significant development ahead of the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya will not participate in the opening match against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Pandya’s absence is due to a one-match suspension imposed by the IPL governing body after his team breached the over-rate regulations on three occasions last season. Since the last infringement occurred during Mumbai Indians’ final group stage match, the suspension carries over to this season.
During the Mumbai Indians’ pre-season press conference, Pandya expressed his sentiments regarding the suspension for the first time. He conveyed his unawareness at the time of the consequences of his team’s over-rate offenses. “The situation was beyond my control. Last year, we were marginally late by about one and a half to two minutes. At that time, I was not informed of the potential outcomes. It is indeed regrettable, but rules are rules. It’s uncertain if this regulation will be upheld in future seasons; that decision falls within the jurisdiction of the authorities tasked with overseeing these matters,” he remarked.
Additionally, Pandya commented on the extended Impact Player rule, which remains in effect until at least the 2027 IPL edition. This rule permits teams to substitute a player in their playing XI at a strategic juncture of the match. There have been mixed reactions from the players, including concerns from prominent figures like Rohit Sharma, who argue the rule might hinder the growth of Indian all-rounders. Reflecting on these challenges, Pandya noted, “In the current cricket landscape, being a genuine all-rounder is crucial to securing a spot in the team. Adjustments may occur in the future, but to foster the development of all-rounders, consistent opportunities must be provided.”
As Pandya serves his suspension on Sunday, Surya Kumar Yadav will assume the captaincy responsibilities for Mumbai Indians in their match against Chennai Super Kings.
