29.03.2025### IPL 2025: KL Rahul Withdraws from Leadership, Delhi Capitals Appoint Surprising Vice-Captain
In a significant development ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Delhi Capitals have appointed South African cricketer Faf du Plessis as their vice-captain. This announcement follows the earlier designation of Axar Patel as the team’s captain.
The announcement was made via Delhi Capitals’ official social media platform, accompanied by a video featuring Faf du Plessis. In the video, du Plessis expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating sentiments like “I am at home” and “Delhi has been great, and the boys have been fantastic,” underscoring his sense of belonging and commitment to the team.
Faf du Plessis, a seasoned cricketer at the age of 40, boasts extensive T20 experience, with an impressive record spanning 404 matches internationally and for various franchises. With a tally of 11,236 runs scored at an average of 32.66, including six centuries and 78 half-centuries, du Plessis brings immense value to the team. His IPL track record is equally commendable, featuring 4,571 runs in 145 matches at an average of 35.99 and a strike rate exceeding 136, alongside 37 fifties and a personal best of 96. His leadership acumen is well-documented, having captained the Dubai franchise to the playoffs in two out of three seasons. Moreover, he is a two-time IPL champion with Chennai Super Kings, underscoring his winning pedigree.
In tandem with du Plessis, Axar Patel will lead the team as captain. Since joining the Capitals in 2019, Patel has evolved as a pivotal player, consistently delivering with both bat and ball. Over the course of 82 matches, he has accumulated 967 runs and claimed 62 wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 7.09. Patel’s prowess and on-field dynamism have endeared him to the Capitals’ faithful and the Indian national team’s supporters alike. He has also played an instrumental role in securing the T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for Team India.
The Delhi Capitals will commence their IPL 2025 journey against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 in Vizag.
