As the excitement builds for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025, the focus remains on the health and fitness updates of key players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Sanju Samson. They, alongside Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, are presently undergoing evaluations at the National Cricket Academy/Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru under the auspices of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The spotlight is predominantly on Jasprit Bumrah, the linchpin of India’s bowling attack, who has been absent from the cricketing scene since sustaining a back injury during the first innings of the Sydney Test, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. Bumrah has been engaged in a detailed rehabilitation program at the NCA, with his progress being closely monitored by the outgoing BCCI Sports Science Head, Nitin Patel. Although a clearance by the end of the month is anticipated, his return date to the Mumbai Indians lineup remains uncertain. Mumbai Indians’ first fixture is against the Chennai Super Kings on March 23, followed by a match against Gujarat Titans on March 29, with a home game against Kolkata on March 31—a match where Bumrah’s presence could become pivotal, though not assured.
Conversely, Sanju Samson is on the verge of overcoming a setback following surgery for a fractured right index finger, which he sustained during the recent T20 series against England. While he has cleared his fitness assessments concerning batting, further evaluations of his wicketkeeping capabilities are imminent. The Rajasthan Royals are prepared with a contingency plan, having Dhruv Jurel, an experienced keeper for India, in their ranks should Sanju not be ready for their first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23.
The Lucknow SuperGiants are eagerly anticipating the clearance of their trio of pacers. Mayank Yadav, sidelined with back issues since October 2024, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan—currently rehabilitating knee cartilage injuries—are under watchful evaluation at the NCA. Avesh Khan has been in recovery after receiving injections post his stint in the Ranji Trophy. Updates on Mohsin’s condition remain sparse following his last outing on December 31. The franchise hopes to have at least two fast bowlers available for their opener against Delhi Capitals on March 24, considering the strategic importance these pacers hold in fortifying the team’s bowling lineup.
