**Gujarat Titans Captain Shubman Gill Advocates for Separating Batting and Captaincy Responsibilities**

Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, has articulated his belief that a successful captain should distinctly separate his batting and leadership duties, as intertwining them may not serve the team’s best interest effectively. Gill assumed leadership from Hardik Pandya last season, and despite the team’s previous consecutive finals appearances in 2022 and 2023, the Titans finished eighth under his initial stewardship.
At the pre-season media conference on Wednesday, Gill emphasized, “The more you keep captaincy and batting apart, the better it is. For me, when I’m gearing up to bat, my focus is solely on my batting. That’s where my best decisions as a player come from,” stated Gill. “On the field or off, when I’m not batting, I can fully engage with my captaincy responsibilities.” During the 2023 season, Gill amassed an impressive 890 runs, which noticeably decreased to 426 runs in his first season as captain. Additionally, his strike rate saw a decline from 157.70 to 147.40.
Reflecting on his maiden captaincy season, Gill acknowledged the learning curves it presented. “The most fascinating and challenging aspect of being a captain is the constant learning—whether about players or self-awareness. To become a competent leader, perpetual improvement is necessary.”
Gill extended his gratitude to Director of Cricket Vikram Solanki and head coach Ashish Nehra for their strategic counsel as he grows into his role. “The knowledge and experiences shared by Ashu bhai (Nehra) and Vikram are invaluable to me,” Gill expressed. He also highlighted the correlation between the team’s performance at home and away games. “A review of our records shows how well we perform at home translates to our success in away matches too. Sustaining great performances in various conditions is crucial.”
Despite an unsatisfactory last season, Gill remains optimistic and advocates consistency without drastic changes. “Given our track record over the past three years, we have one of the highest win percentages. Continuing in this vein can lead to another successful season. A new season doesn’t necessitate drastic overhauls.”
Addressing the evolving nature of T20 cricket, Gill was cautious about predicting significant scores in the upcoming IPL edition. “Our aim isn’t to set milestones like scoring 300 runs. It is essential to assess conditions and situations to determine ideal targets—be it 240, 250, or even as modest as 150. Adapting to different wickets and scenarios is what marks a great team.”
