Mahmudullah, one of Bangladesh’s most seasoned cricketers, officially declared his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, March 12. This announcement, shared through his social media platforms, marks the end of an illustrious career.
Previously, Mahmudullah had requested that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) not consider him for a central contract beyond February 2025. “I have decided to retire from international cricket,” he wrote. In his heartfelt message, he expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and especially to his fans who have stood by him throughout his career. Acknowledging the support of his family, he paid special tribute to his parents, in-laws, particularly his father-in-law, and most importantly his brother, Emdad Ullah, who has been a constant source of guidance and mentorship since his childhood.
He further extended his gratitude to his wife and children, who have been his unwavering support system, noting how his son Raeid would miss seeing him in his cherished red and green jersey. “Not everything ends perfectly, but one must embrace change and move forward,” he mused, signing off with “PEACE….. Best wishes to my team and Bangladesh cricket.”
Since the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, both Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim faced scrutiny regarding their positions in the national side. Following Rahim’s recent retirement from ODIs, Mahmudullah has opted for a similar path.
At 39, Mahmudullah leaves behind a remarkable legacy. He stands as the sole Bangladeshi cricketer to have scored three centuries in ODI World Cups, with two centuries achieved during the 2015 edition and one in 2023. His prolific career encompassed 239 ODIs, 50 Tests, and 141 T20Is.
