In a significant development, seasoned all-rounder Mahmudullah has requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to exclude him from their central contract starting March 2025. This decision has subsequently ruled him out of contention for the next ICC Cricket World Cup.
An official from the BCB confirmed that Mahmudullah, who was slated to be placed in the Grade B category of the proposed central contracts list for 2025, has made this request. “Mahmudullah has asked the board not to include him in the central contract from March onwards,” the official told Cricbuzz. Despite his request, he will still receive his contractual salary for January and February, as he remains under the current contract beginning in January.
During the recent board meeting, the central contract proposal was presented but not immediately ratified. Following the Champions Trophy, the status of both Mahmudullah and fellow veteran Mushfiqur Rahim in the national setup was critically assessed. Rahim has already announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), and expectations are growing that Mahmudullah, who boasts an illustrious career featuring 239 ODIs, may soon make a similar decision.
It is understood from Mahmudullah’s communication with the board that he has no intentions of participating in the 2027 World Cup. His decision to forgo the central contract can be viewed as a strategic step towards retirement from international cricket.
