England’s fast bowling spearhead, Mark Wood, has been sidelined from all forms of cricket for the forthcoming four months, the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Thursday, March 13. Wood, aged 35, sustained ligament damage to his left knee, necessitating surgical intervention this week. Regrettably, this will render him unavailable for an extended period.
This setback casts doubt over Wood’s participation in the five-match Test series against India, scheduled to take place at home in June and July.
Wood’s difficulties were first noted during the Champions Trophy clash with Afghanistan in Lahore on February 26, when he began experiencing heightened stiffness and discomfort in his knee. During his initial spell, the physio attended to his left knee after just four overs. He completed only eight overs and maneuvered the running between the wickets cautiously during the chase, with England’s progression in the Champions Trophy hanging in the balance. The ECB disclosed that Wood had been grappling with knee discomfort for the past year.
Since his debut for England in 2015, Wood has been no stranger to injury woes. He missed the final four months of 2024 due to an elbow injury but made a successful return during the recent tour of India, featuring in four T20 Internationals and two ODIs. This development is yet another setback for England as fellow fast bowler Brydon Carse has also been sidelined due to a toe injury incurred during the group stage match against Australia. This injury has consequently ruled the all-rounder out of the upcoming Indian Premier League.
