23.03.2025**Carrying the Baton: Mehidy Hasan Miraz Confident in Bangladesh’s Transition Phase**
**By Atif Azam**
The recent retirement of stalwart Mahmudullah from One Day Internationals (ODIs) signifies a pivotal moment in Bangladesh cricket, concluding the ODI presence of the esteemed ‘Fab Five’: Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah. While Shakib is yet to make an official exit from ODIs, having already retired from Tests and T20Is, and Mashrafe remains silent on his future in Tests and ODIs, a return for these veterans appears improbable due to age considerations. This has sparked discussions of an impending transition phase in Bangladesh’s ODI squad. However, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz offers a different perspective.
Speaking at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mehidy expressed confidence in the existing experience within the Bangladesh team. “Our team currently features six to seven players who have been part of international cricket for 7-10 years. They can no longer be considered newcomers,” he articulated. As Mehidy is poised to embrace a leadership role within the dressing room, he underlined the significance of harmonizing the experience of seasoned players with those having 2-3 years of international exposure. “A strategic plan with meticulous coordination is imperative,” he continued, “Our predecessors like Mushfiq[ur] bhai elevated the team to new heights. It’s now our responsibility to further enhance Bangladesh cricket,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Mehidy underscored the necessity of long-term planning with an aim towards the 2027 World Cup. “Our generation is yet to triumph in a major tournament, and clinching a trophy would be monumental for us. This is a process demanding prompt decisions and unwavering commitment. With two to two-and-a-half years before the World Cup, we must initiate team preparations immediately. Consistent opportunities for players are crucial; otherwise, late preparations could pose challenges,” he cautioned.
