In a recent discourse on the potential impact of Jasprit Bumrah’s return to the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025, former Australian captain Michael Clarke expressed doubts about the pacer’s effectiveness post-recovery. Bumrah, who has been out of action since sustaining an injury against Australia in Sydney earlier this year, is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Michael Clarke, speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, cast uncertainty over Bumrah’s performance levels when he reenters the fray. “I’m concerned about Bumrah’s absence from competitive cricket. Without starting the tournament, it’s unlikely he’ll be at peak performance from the onset,” Clarke asserted. “While Bumrah is a phenomenal talent capable of dismantling batting lineups with ease, a gradual return to form is expected. Should Bumrah be unavailable, it will significantly challenge Mumbai Indians’ quest for a sixth title,” he elaborated.
Bumrah’s injury led to his absence during India’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign. His last appearance was in Sydney, where his inability to bowl in the final innings allowed Australia to secure a series victory.
Discussing favorites for the IPL 2025, Clarke showed a preference towards SunRisers Hyderabad, while emphasizing the critical role of their bowling unit. “I may have a slight bias, backing Pat Cummins and SunRisers Hyderabad,” Clarke mentioned. “Their batting prowess is undeniable, but their success hinges on the effectiveness of their bowlers. Cummins, equipped with enhanced captaincy skills, will play a pivotal role. The team’s quicks, crucial to death bowling strategies, must remain fit,” he added.
For SunRisers Hyderabad, combatting the surface challenges at Uppal forms a significant hurdle. However, with Cummins and Mohammed Shami spearheading the attack, they possess the requisite acumen to capitalize on strong batting performances. The inclusion of Harshal Patel could offer depth during death overs, notwithstanding his elevated economy rate, while the presence of spinner Adam Zampa remains contingent on conditions. Out-of-favor scenarios could see Rahul Chahar and Abhishek Sharma stepping in as viable slow-bowling alternatives.
