During their meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was entertained by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s humorous comment regarding the Champions Trophy 2025 final. Luxon lightheartedly explained that he refrained from discussing cricket and the Champions Trophy final, joking that doing so could lead to a “diplomatic incident.” This remark followed India’s victory over New Zealand in the final held in Dubai, securing the Champions Trophy title. Luxon also referenced New Zealand’s 3-0 Test series victory in India last year, which ended India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship Final, led by Rohit Sharma. Luxon quipped, “I really appreciate that PM Modi didn’t bring up New Zealand’s loss in the Champions Trophy, and I avoided our Test victories in India. Let’s maintain the peace without causing a diplomatic incident,” causing PM Modi to laugh at the exchange.
Former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor, present at the event, also found delight in the friendly banter between the two leaders.

At the joint press conference, PM Luxon humorously acknowledged New Zealand’s recent cricket setbacks against India, expressing gratitude to PM @narendramodi for not mentioning them. “Let’s just keep it like that and avoid a…,” Luxon commented, adding to the light-hearted atmosphere.
Luxon further commended the Indian cricket team for their outstanding performances, saying, “Under PM Modi’s leadership, the men in blue have emerged as a formidable force in cricket, most recently clinching the Champions Trophy in Dubai against our men in black. This victory disappointed many New Zealanders, myself included. As a gracious gesture, I simply wish to extend my congratulations,” Luxon stated, as reported by PTI.
