In the cricketing world, Shreyas Iyer has earned the title of the “silent hero” following India’s successful ICC Champions Trophy campaign. His pivotal role in India’s triumphant journey in Dubai sparked discussions regarding his position in the team, a position not guaranteed at No. 4 before the tournament. This debate was further intensified by management’s uncertain stance, yet, Iyer let his bat unequivocally express his prowess, contributing significantly to the team’s achievements.
Surprisingly, despite his prowess, Iyer remains outside the BCCI’s central contract list. However, he dismisses any necessity to champion his cause personally. During the Champions Trophy, he emerged as India’s second-highest run-scorer with 243 runs, closely following Rachin Ravindra’s 263. Though a century eluded him, Iyer expressed satisfaction with his contributions. “It was incredibly fulfilling. While a hundred would have been nice, I have no regrets. Reaching a commendable team total and achieving a 44-run victory was rewarding,” Iyer shared with Hindustan Times.
Critics have previously doubted Iyer’s ability against short deliveries, but he effectively silenced them during the Champions Trophy, particularly after confidently facing England’s Jofra Archer’s bouncers in an ODI series. Reflecting on this feat, Iyer credited his domestic cricket experiences for honing his skill against challenging shots. “Confidence stemmed from my domestic season, where I tackled several tough deliveries. My technical stance allowed me to generate power, which I executed during the England series and thereafter,” he elaborated.
Iyer has consistently proven to be India’s most dependable No. 4 in ODI cricket. Nonetheless, ambiguity surrounds his position in other formats. He trusts that his on-field performances convey the necessary messages to selectors. “I don’t need to send explicit messages. My belief in myself and consistent performance communicate all required. Hard work tests you as an athlete and individual, and numerous people, such as Amre sir, Abhishek Nayar, my trainer Sagar, and nutritionist Nicole Kedia, have supported me,” Iyer acknowledged.
