Leicestershire County Cricket Club has announced the exciting acquisition of Pakistan’s Test captain, Shan Masood, who has signed an all-format contract for the 2025 season. At the age of 35, Masood joins the ranks alongside new club captain Peter Handscomb and Netherlands international Logan van Beek as one of the squad’s key overseas players. Masood will arrive at the Uptonsteel County Ground post-Pakistan Super League (PSL), aligning with his teammates ahead of Leicestershire’s Vitality Blast opener on May 31.
With an extensive first-class pedigree, Masood boasts over 22,000 career runs since his debut in 2007, highlighted by a monumental 239 against Sussex in 2022. Fast approaching 12,000 runs with a formidable average nearing 40, his performance in limited-overs cricket is equally commendable. The left-handed batsman has proven to be a formidable force in T20s with an average of 26.53 and a strike rate of 125.3, and an impressive List A average of over 52.
Throughout his career, Masood has been capped 70 times for Pakistan and has gained substantial experience in county cricket. His remarkable tenure with Derbyshire in 2022 saw him amass 1,832 runs over 28 matches, propelling him to a captaincy role at Yorkshire, where he led the team to Division One promotion last summer.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Masood remarked, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play all three formats for Leicestershire. Admiring the Club from afar and engaging with the team over the past three seasons has been inspiring.”
Reflecting on his previous experiences, he continued, “I cherish playing at Uptonsteel County Ground, where the loyal fans create an electrifying ambiance. The Club’s competitiveness across all formats and dedication to nurturing talent makes it an exciting time to join the Foxes.”
Claude Henderson, Director of Cricket, shared his delight: “We are elated to welcome a player of Shan’s stature to Leicestershire. His proven international and county track record, combined with his leadership on and off the field, will be instrumental to our success across formats.”
