30.03.2025### Sourav Ganguly Highlights Key Area for Improvement in India’s Test Cricket
Former Indian cricket captain, the esteemed Sourav Ganguly, has unequivocally pinpointed a crucial weakness in India’s Test cricket performance, despite their recent success in clinching the Champions Trophy 2025. Ganguly has expressed concerns regarding India’s batting capabilities, urging emerging talents like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant to elevate their contributions in the Test format, especially on overseas assignments.
As India prepares to tour England for a five-match Test series in June, a critical segment of the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, Ganguly’s insights aim to stimulate pivotal discussions. India’s recent Test outings have ended unfavorably, with a 0-3 sweep by New Zealand on home soil and a 1-3 defeat against Australia away.
Ganguly, speaking at the RevSportz Trailblazers 3.0 Conclave, noted the pressing issue of Indian players generally averaging below 40 in international conditions, apart from stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal. “My primary concern is that, besides Virat and Yashasvi, our batsmen struggle to maintain an average above 40 away from home. A robust Test team requires at least three or four out of the top six batters to average close to 50 in Test matches,” Ganguly stated.
He further outlined a strategic approach to overcoming these challenges in English conditions: “To overturn our red-ball record in England, it is imperative to set substantial scores. Our past triumphs abroad were anchored by totals of 400-500 runs. You simply cannot compete in Test matches with scores like 200 or 250.” He highlighted India’s victory in Perth as a blueprint for success due to their ability to post a formidable total.
Ganguly also advised Rishabh Pant to adapt and face challenges head-on: “Pant needs to develop the technique to handle swinging deliveries without reckless approaches. It’s about mental toughness, determination, and resilience. The potential is undeniable, with Virat leading the way. I am confident he will not fail over the course of five Tests in England.” He emphasized the need for young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill to rise to the occasion.
Drawing parallels with successful campaigns under his own captaincy, including victories in Pakistan and drawing Test series in England and Australia, Ganguly highlighted the importance of consistently setting high totals to secure success in Test cricket.
