28.03.2025### Rajasthan Royals Announce Unanticipated Captaincy Change for Initial IPL Matches; Sanju Samson to Feature Solely as Batsman
In a significant development ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Rajasthan Royals have declared a temporary change in leadership due to a crucial setback. As the 18th season of the premier tournament gears up to commence, with the Kolkata Knight Riders clashing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens on March 22, the Royals are set to begin their campaign against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. However, for their first three encounters, they will be under the new captaincy of Riyan Parag, as regular captain Sanju Samson recovers from a finger injury.
The franchise confirmed that Samson, while unable to assume his usual wicketkeeping and fielding roles, will continue to contribute as a specialist batsman until he receives full medical clearance. A statement from the team emphasized Samson’s ongoing influence, stating, “Sanju Samson, a pivotal figure within the Royals’ lineup, will continue to make significant contributions with the bat until he can resume complete duties. Once fully fit, he will reassume the captaincy.”
Samson, who has recently rejoined the team post-recovery from finger surgery necessitated by an injury sustained during the T20I series against England in February, will remain active on the field despite this temporary adjustment.
Rajasthan Royals’ strategic decision to appoint Riyan Parag as the interim captain highlights the franchise’s trust in his leadership capabilities, honed during his tenure as the domestic captain for Assam. His familiarity with the Royals’ ethos and dynamic positions him aptly for this leadership role in the tournament’s early stages.
Rajasthan Royals’ initial home fixtures also add excitement, with matches against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings set for March 26 and March 30 at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, before returning to their primary venue at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
The Royals, crowned champions in the inaugural 2008 IPL season, showcased formidable performance last year by reaching the playoffs, concluding third on the points table, albeit missing the finals after falling to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eliminator.
