Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali recently provided a candid assessment regarding the reputation of Pakistan’s fast bowlers. In a conversation on the “Beard Before Wicket” YouTube show, Moeen addressed the perception that Pakistan consistently produces the finest pace bowlers, specifically mentioning the current trio of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah. While acknowledging their skills, Moeen expressed that they, though proficient, do not rank among the elite. This critique comes in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing exit at the group stage of the Champions Trophy, a sentiment echoed by the lackluster performances of the aforementioned fast bowlers during the tournament. Although Shaheen and Haris were retained for the white-ball series against New Zealand, Naseem was omitted due to the team’s underwhelming show at the Champions Trophy.

Moeen elaborated on the longstanding tradition of Pakistan yielding talented fast bowlers, attributing this to an exceptional coaching system. Despite the criticism, Pakistan remains renowned for nurturing gifted pacers.

In contrast, New Zealand capitalized on Pakistan’s struggles in the first T20I, inflicting a significant defeat. The hosts secured an emphatic victory with remaining 59 balls, having dismissed Pakistan for a mere 91 runs in 18.4 overs, and then comfortably chasing the target in 10.1 overs for the loss of just one wicket.
