India’s T20I cricket performances have been exemplary over the past year, capturing the T20 World Cup 2024 title without defeat. Their success continued with series victories against Sri Lanka, South Africa, and a clean sweep against England at home. Central to this triumph has been Sanju Samson, whose prowess as an opening batsman has been affirmed with three centuries to his name. Yet, Aakash Chopra is championing Rishabh Pant as a worthy contender for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026.
Despite the current T20I squad’s success, Chopra asserts the playing XI for the T20 World Cup 2026 remains tentative. He sees immense potential in Pant, who was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a record Rs 27 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction and will lead LSG as captain.
“This is a pivotal moment for Rishabh Pant. Though absent from the T20 team, his talent is undeniable. His absence has raised many eyebrows. If he seizes this season to amass runs, he can make a formidable impact,” Chopra shared on his YouTube channel.
The debate regarding Pant’s role, particularly should he open given LSG’s uncertain opening partnership, persists. However, Chopra advises against this strategy: “Pant’s challenge isn’t to surpass Sanju Samson but to carve his niche. A position above No. 3 or No. 4 isn’t necessary.”
Despite being part of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 team, Pant has been sidelined from subsequent T20I formats. With the next T20 World Cup scheduled in India for February and March 2026, performances in IPL 2025 are crucial.
“I remain unconvinced that today’s T20 team will mirror next year’s World Cup lineup. Selection processes will be highly fluid, making this IPL a crucial determinant in securing positions,” Chopra emphasized.
Pant will commence his 2025 IPL journey with LSG against his former team, Delhi Capitals, on Monday, March 24.
