In the second T20I of the five-match series against Pakistan, New Zealand showcased their dominance yet again with a commanding six-wicket victory, despite challenging weather conditions affecting the game. Pakistan, after batting first, posted a respectable 135/9 in a 15-over-per-side contest. However, New Zealand effortlessly chased down the target, underscoring the continued struggles of the Pakistani bowlers to contain the Kiwis.
Of note was the performance of Pakistan’s premier pacer, Shaheen Afridi, who found himself under siege from New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batsman, Tim Seifert. Afridi conceded a total of 31 runs in his three-over spell, with a remarkable 26 of those coming in a single over, including four massive sixes from Seifert. This onslaught featured a breathtaking 119-meter six at the University Oval in Dunedin.
The spirited performance by New Zealand in this match contrasts sharply with Pakistan’s efforts. Although the visitors demonstrated improvement compared to their previous outing, they still trail 0-2 in the series. Pakistan’s captain, Salman Agha, acknowledged the incremental progress during the post-match presentation and urged his top-order to enhance their performance during powerplays to reinvigorate their campaign for a series comeback.
“The conditions were quite challenging today. There were notable improvements in our performance compared to the last match. Our batting was stronger, the fielding was outstanding, and our bowling showed promise in intervals. However, we need to adapt better to the bounce and improve our showing during the powerplay. Haris’s bowling was commendable after the powerplay, but both our batting and bowling units must elevate their game during these critical phases,” Agha stated.
Pakistan remains under pressure to secure a win in the upcoming match to preserve their chances in the series.
