Shahid Afridi, a distinguished former captain of Pakistan, has voiced his displeasure regarding the national team’s recent performances, particularly following their losses to New Zealand in the initial T20Is. Afridi’s critique was directed towards both the players and the team management. During a recent media engagement, he highlighted the inefficiencies in the selection process and critiqued the handling of players by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Afridi dissected the batting approach of current players: “It appears everyone aims to emulate Shahid Afridi’s batting style, yet it’s unrealistic to score 200 in every match.”
He continued his critique by pointing out strategic missteps in team selection: “First-class players with only 10-11 matches experience were chosen; spinners were overlooked when needed, and pacers were neglected when the situation demanded them,” Afridi observed. He mentioned promising talents like Mohammad Hasnain and Usman Khan, who have been outstanding in the domestic circuit but have not been given sufficient opportunities on the national stage. “Why keep these players in the squad if they aren’t going to play?” he questioned.
Afridi also criticized the PCB’s management and its handling of the national team’s results. Pakistan’s performance has been underwhelming, with early exits from both the T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He criticized the frequent changes in leadership and inconsistent decision-making within the governing body. “The board requires a permanent chairman. Babar Azam was given ample opportunities as captain, but why did Mohammad Rizwan have his tenure limited to merely six months?” Afridi concluded.
