Shreyas Iyer, who captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL victory in 2024, has declared his intention to excel at the No. 3 batting position during the upcoming Indian Premier League season with Punjab Kings. Although not currently part of India’s T20 squad, an impressive debut season with Punjab Kings could rejuvenate Iyer’s international prospects in the shortest format.
Having previously assumed the role of a “silent hero” at number four during a successful Champions Trophy campaign, Iyer articulates his aspirations with clarity. “The IPL is a cornerstone of Indian cricket, and if I aspire to establish myself in T20, it would undoubtedly be at number 3. I am determined to focus on this position, contingent upon the coach’s endorsement,” Iyer expressed at the season-opening media briefing alongside head coach Ricky Ponting.
This partnership reunites Iyer with Ponting, with whom he shares a productive history from their association at Delhi Capitals. Iyer’s eagerness for this collaboration is palpable. “Working with Ricky over the years, I’ve gained insights into his supportive nature, treating every player with respect and fostering confidence, irrespective of outcomes,” Iyer noted.
Similarly, Ponting reflected on the rapport shared with Iyer, highlighting his admiration for Iyer’s leadership and talent. The Punjab Kings have curated a formidable squad, including key players like Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Marco Jansen, underlining their intent for the season.
Ponting emphasized the importance of home victories, a challenge Punjab Kings have faced in recent years. “Winning at home is integral to IPL success, and I am here to tackle this challenge head-on,” Ponting remarked.
As Punjab Kings gear up for their IPL opener against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 25, both Iyer and Ponting share the unified goal of clinching the trophy. The dynamics between captain and coach promise a season replete with dynamic and entertaining cricket.
