25.03.2025### Significant Developments in Gujarat Titans Ahead of IPL 2025: “As Part of the Acquisition…”
In a notable development ahead of the commencement of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Torrent Group, based in Ahmedabad, has announced the successful acquisition of a majority 67% stake in the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans. This acquisition marks Torrent Group’s strategic entry into the fast-evolving sports sector in India.
The transaction involves purchasing the 67% stake from Irelia Sports India Pvt Ltd, initially held by Irelia Company Pte Ltd under the stewardship of the private equity fund CVC. The acquisition has received all requisite approvals, including from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirming that “the conditions necessary for completion have been satisfied,” stated Torrent Group, a prominent entity in the healthcare and energy sectors.
Notably, Irelia, which is managed by CVC-advised funds, will retain a significant minority interest of 33%, thereby continuing its affiliation with the Gujarat Titans franchise. Although the financial specifics of the deal remain undisclosed, Torrent Group officially declared the signing of definitive agreements on February 12, cementing its intention to diversify into the expanding sports market in India.
Gujarat Titans, a relatively young yet successful franchise in IPL history, will leverage Torrent’s vast experience in managing and growing large-scale enterprises. The acquisition aims to bolster team operations, enhance fan engagement, and accelerate commercial growth, positioning the franchise for a promising future. This move reaffirms Torrent Group’s commitment to expanding its business scope while contributing to India’s burgeoning sports ecosystem.
The IPL, a premier global sporting spectacle, features 10 teams representing different Indian cities or regions, owned by an eclectic blend of corporate giants, multinational companies, affluent family offices, and private equity players. Notable ownership includes Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries with Mumbai Indians, and the RPSG Group helmed by Sanjiv Goenka owning Lucknow Super Giants, among others.
Gujarat Titans, established in 2022, swiftly carved a niche in the IPL by clinching the title in their debut season and securing a runner-up finish the subsequent year. Coached by Ashish Nehra and captained by Shubman Gill, the Titans play at the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest cricket stadium in the world. This transaction propels Torrent Group and Gujarat Titans toward becoming a formidable force in both Indian and global cricket arenas.
