29.03.2025Sourav Ganguly’s Call for Enhanced Leadership and Batting from Rohit Sharma
In a resounding call for greater accountability, former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has urged current skipper Rohit Sharma to embrace more responsibility both as a captain and a batsman in the forthcoming Test series against England.
Despite a challenging series against Australia, the victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy solidified Rohit’s position as captain. However, Ganguly has highlighted the need for improvement in India’s recent Test performances. He commended Rohit’s outstanding prowess in white-ball cricket but expressed concern over his performance in the longest format of the game in recent years.
During an event with RevSportz, Ganguly remarked, “Rohit’s form in red-ball cricket over the last four to five years has been unexpected. Given his stature and skill, he can certainly achieve more. With five Tests against England ahead, he needs to strategize and execute effectively. The conditions will be challenging, with seam and swing at play. While he’s a titan in white-ball formats, his contributions in the Test arena are crucial.”
Ganguly also emphasized the significance of leadership in a high-stakes series such as this. “Rohit Sharma is an exceptional captain, as witnessed both with India and Mumbai Indians. I’ve captained India myself and recognize the attributes of a strong leader. While his accomplishments in limited overs are commendable, his continued role in Test cricket is vital.
If Rohit is attentive, he should not only helm the team with ambition but also transform its fortunes in Test cricket. India currently lacks prowess in the red-ball format and must find a path to excel in England. This five-Test series is crucial, and it’s imperative that Rohit galvanizes the team for success,” Ganguly asserted.
