29.03.2025**IPL 2025: Suryakumar Yadav to Lead Mumbai Indians in Season Opener Against Chennai Super Kings**
By Vijay Tagore
In the 2025 Indian Premier League season opener, Suryakumar Yadav will assume the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians as they face long-standing rivals, the Chennai Super Kings, in a thrilling encounter set in Chennai. This appointment is necessitated by the suspension of regular captain, Hardik Pandya, who is serving a one-match ban due to a slow over-rate penalty incurred at the conclusion of last season.
Further complicating the situation for Mumbai Indians is the absence of key player Jasprit Bumrah, sidelined due to injury. Yadav’s elevation to captaincy is, therefore, a strategic move, aligning with his recent experience leading the Indian national team in T20 internationals. At a pre-season press briefing, attended by Pandya and head coach Mahela Jayawardene, the decision was officially announced.
“Suryakumar Yadav, who currently leads India in T20Is, will step up as Mumbai Indians captain for the first match,” confirmed Pandya. Jayawardene concurred, “Indeed, with Hardik being unavailable, Surya will lead the side.”
The Mumbai Indians squad boasts seasoned leaders; Rohit Sharma, who has captained India across all formats and helmed the Mumbai Indians from 2013 to 2023, and Jasprit Bumrah, India’s former Test captain, complement Yadav’s leadership.
Expressing confidence in his leadership team, Pandya remarked, “I consider myself fortunate to have three experienced captains in the team. Their diverse leadership experiences are invaluable, and I can always rely on them for guidance and support.”
Although disheartened by his suspension, Pandya remained pragmatic about the situation. “The events of last season are beyond my control. We slightly overran on time, and now I must adhere to the disciplinary process,” he said.
Pandya will rejoin the squad for their second match against Gujarat Titans, with Mumbai Indians hosting their first home game of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium on March 31.
