The European T20 Premier League (ETPL), a pioneering franchise-based cricket tournament on the continent, is set to launch its inaugural season this summer. The competition will unfold across Dublin in Ireland and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, as declared by the organizers on March 18. Sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the ETPL will feature six teams competing over 33 matches, scheduled to take place from July 15 to August 8.
Conceived through a collaborative effort involving Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, the league will comprise six franchise teams, each based in one of the three countries. Each squad will include eight local players and a developing player from a European nation, emphasizing the development of regional talent.
“This tournament represents an extraordinary collaboration, with support from Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and Cricket Netherlands, marking a historic commitment to advancing the sport across Europe,” stated the league officials.
The ETPL is poised to engage extensively with the European market, excluding England, offering significant expansion opportunities as it connects with new regions. The Irish franchises, representing Dublin and Belfast, promise to deliver a competitive spirit within the league. This initiative aims to bolster cricket’s development within these nations, offering emerging players the chance to gain international exposure.
In alignment with successful franchise-based models, the ETPL will adopt a draft system while distinguishing itself as the first competition of its kind incorporating three national cricket boards.
Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, serving as a promoter and co-founder of the league, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am thrilled to be part of the European T20 Premier League. This league is a remarkable opportunity to advance cricket in Europe, nurturing local talent and providing world-class entertainment to fans. I believe the ETPL will not only highlight Europe’s cricketing prowess but also offer a rich cultural experience for families and communities,” he remarked during his visit to Dublin.
