Cricket Australia has announced a groundbreaking fixture to mark the sesquicentennial anniversary of men’s Test cricket. A one-off Test match between Australia and England will unfold under the lights of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from March 11-15, 2027. This landmark encounter will be played with a pink-ball, marking the first day-night men’s Test at this historic venue.
The MCG, which recently facilitated a day-night women’s Ashes Test, will cater to a broader audience with this illuminated schedule. This test follows the rich legacy started with the inaugural Test in 1877 and the centenary Test in 1977—both traditional daytime, red-ball matches at the same venue.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg emphasized the event as both a homage to the game’s storied past and an acknowledgment of its ongoing evolution. “Hosting the 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG under lights is set to become one of cricket’s most celebrated events. This format not only honors our storied past but also embraces modern advancements in Test cricket,” Greenberg remarked.
“The move to a day-night setting will enable greater attendance and viewership, promising to etch new memorable moments into the annals of cricketing history,” he added. Reflecting on the centenary Test, which produced legendary feats like David Hookes’ five consecutive boundaries off Tony Greig and Derek Randall’s tenacious century, Greenberg expressed confidence that the upcoming fixture will similarly create indelible memories.
“The anticipation generated by this season’s Ashes will serve as the perfect prelude to this historic event in two years, and we eagerly anticipate the celebrations,” Greenberg concluded, while extending gratitude to the Victorian Government and the Melbourne Cricket Club for their support.
While the match won’t contribute points towards the World Test Championship (WTC), it forms a key part of the season comprising 12 Tests, including three in Sri Lanka, three against New Zealand at home, and five in India. This busy year will see Australia also compete in the Ashes in England and the ODI World Cup in South Africa later on.
