Five IPL 2025 Debutants to Watch: From Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the Young Prodigy, to Priyansh Arya, the Six-Six Hitter
As the highly-anticipated 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaches, it is set to spotlight a new wave of talented players poised to make their debut. The 18th edition of this illustrious tournament will kick off on March 22, featuring 74 matches across 13 venues, including 12 double-headers, culminating on May 25. Let us delve into the profiles of some distinguished debutants, celebrated for their remarkable performances in domestic, youth, and international cricket.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals)
The Rajasthan Royals strategically secured the services of 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi for Rs 1.1 crore during the previous mega auction, marking him as the youngest participant in IPL history. Hailing from Bihar, Suryavanshi has already made waves by scoring 104 off 62 deliveries for India U-19 against Australia U-19 in Chennai—an innings which stands as the fastest century by an Indian in youth Tests, and second-fastest globally. The youngest debutant in the Ranji Trophy and representing India U-19 exemplifies his meteoric rise. Notable scores include a pivotal 67 off 36 balls in the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2024 semi-final, propelling India to the final and earning him Player of the Match honors. His List-A debut in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 cemented his place as India’s youngest player at this level, surpassing Ali Akbar’s long-standing record.
Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings)
Delhi’s explosive opener Priyansh Arya caught the attention of the Punjab Kings, who acquired him for Rs 3.8 crore following his role as the top scorer in the inaugural Delhi Premier League (DPL), with 608 runs from ten innings for South Delhi Superstarz. Arya made headlines with his awe-inspiring feat of hitting six sixes in a single over. During the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Arya distinguished himself as Delhi’s leading run-getter, amassing 222 runs at an average of 31.71 and an impressive strike rate of 166.91, though this was not enough for selection in the IPL 2024 auction.
Bevon Jacobs (Mumbai Indians)
The unheralded New Zealand batsman Bevon Jacobs joins the Mumbai Indians following a sensational 157-run innings for Auckland against Central Districts in the Plunket Shield 2024-25. His debut for Canterbury in the Super Smash 2023-24 saw him contribute a striking 42 from 20 balls. The young right-hander, with a T20 century under his belt, concluded among the leading run-scorers in the Super Smash 2024-25 and has remained formidable in the Ford Trophy. With 423 T20 runs and a personal best of 90 not out from 20 matches, Jacobs is poised for further successes.
Josh Inglis (Punjab Kings)
Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis embarks on his inaugural IPL endeavor with the Punjab Kings, having been procured for Rs 2.6 crore. Inglis boasts an ODI century from the Champions Trophy, where he guided Australia to a thrilling chase of 352 against England, and a debut Test century in Galle. These exploits have enshrined him among the distinguished Australians with international tons in all three formats. Notably, one of his dual T20I centuries was against India, showcasing his aptitude against an IPL-grade bowling attack, including his now teammate Arshdeep Singh. Inglis has amassed 706 runs from 29 T20Is, with his highest score being 110.
Jacob Bethell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
In a surprise acquisition, Royal Challengers Bengaluru welcomed English all-rounder Jacob Bethell, locking him in for Rs. 2.6 crore. Positioned to fill the void left by Glenn Maxwell and Will Jacks, Bethell, a left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox spinner, possesses a formidable T20I strike rate of 167.96. His versatility allows him to operate in both top and middle-order batting roles, as well as a finishing capacity in ODIs. Bethell made his T20I and ODI debuts against Australia and later, his Test debut against New Zealand in Christchurch. The prolific year of 2024 saw Bethell excel in the T20 Blast for Warwickshire and the Hundred for Birmingham Phoenix, earning England caps across all formats. His dynamism soon attracted global T20 franchise interest, resulting in contracts with Melbourne Renegades, Paarl Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Bethell added a maiden Big Bash League half-century against Hobart Hurricanes to his credentials.
