In a stellar display at their home ground in Lucknow, the UP Warriorz registered the highest-ever total in Women’s Premier League history, amassing a formidable 225/5. This commanding performance came a day after being eliminated, with 21-year-old Georgia Voll leading the charge, remaining undefeated on 99. Kiran Navgire provided a devastating 16-ball cameo, scoring 46, as RCB’s bowlers, returning from a week-long break, showed signs of rustiness.
RCB had the formidable task of topping their own record from the season opener to stay in the playoff contention. Despite a commendable chase, they fell short by 12 runs, marking their fifth consecutive defeat and ending their title defense with one league game remaining.
Grace Harris set the tone early, targeting Kim Garth in the PowerPlay, hitting five boundaries in Garth’s initial two-over spell for 22 runs. Voll took over with a flurry of boundaries against Renuka Thakur and launched Charlie Dean over deep midwicket, notching up a half-century partnership in just 4.5 overs. The Warriorz reached an impressive 67/0 at the end of six overs.
Even as the field spread, Harris continued to target Garth’s short deliveries, with the openers stitching a rapid 77-run partnership. A direct hit from the opposition brought a pause to the onslaught as Harris was run out early in the eighth over. However, Navgire soon unleashed her prowess, dispatching three of the league’s most experienced bowlers all across the ground. She took Ellyse Perry for a six first up and handled Georgia Wareham’s googly with back-to-back maximums, eventually succumbing on 46, just shy of the fastest fifty in WPL history.
At 148/1 in the 13th over, Chinelle Henry was promoted up the order and justified the decision with a quickfire 19 while Voll continued her dominance. She raised the Warriorz’s score past 200 in quick succession and approached the record individual score.
Strategic missteps in RCB’s bowling allowed Voll to exploit the leg-side boundaries with ease. Although the 18th over was boundary-less, Sophie Ecclestone managed to add some flourish with consecutive fours in Garth’s final over. Voll, having started the final over on 91, missed out on a century due to a single and the dismissal of Deepti Sharma, equalling Sophie Devine’s 99 in the WPL record books.
On the chase, Smriti Mandhana began with a stylish boundary but was dismissed when she pulled a short ball straight to midwicket. Meanwhile, S Meghana came out firing, plundering a 22-run over against Harris. Despite a brief partnership with Perry, Meghana misjudged and was caught at long-on off Ecclestone.
Perry and Raghavi Bist pushed RCB to 70/2 by the end of the PowerPlay, the top score of the season. But UPW regularly struck back, with Anjali Sarvani delivering a standout performance, breaching Perry’s stumps with a fine inswinger and then aiding in Raghavi’s dismissal through wicketkeeper Uma Chetry’s acrobatics.
RCB’s hopes briefly revived as Richa Ghosh counter-attacked, targeting Deepti, Sarvani, and Henry, compiling a quick half-century highlighted by consecutive sixes. Unfortunately, an aggressive shot led to her dismissal, dealing a significant blow to RCB’s chase.
In an intense finale coinciding with International Women’s Day, the sides delivered a memorable encounter. Sneh Rana, attempting to recreate Sophie Ecclestone’s heroics, blasted a brief 26 involving rapid boundaries but succumbed on the penultimate ball. With 15 needed from the final over, a run-out concluded a spirited chase and secured a playoff spot for Gujarat Giants—their first in three seasons.
